PayPal Commercial Underwriting is seeking a new analyst to join the team. The ideal candidate has a strong business acumen with refined analytical skills, and has exemplary written and oral communication and collaboration skills. The ability to exercise sound judgment and be resourceful in all things is imperative to success as a Commercial Underwriting Analyst.

Core Duties

  • Assess business model risk and quickly determine credit exposure risk on new and existing merchants to determine appropriate course of action.
  • Analyze financial and bank statements to assess credit worthiness.
  • Collaborate with internal business partners to obtain understanding of merchants, and tactically mitigate risk exposure. 
  • Collaborate with internal business partners on customer calls requiring explanation of specific internal credit policies and decisions related to those policies
  • Monitor and investigate merchants’ credit card processing activities using internal and external Risk monitoring tools
  • Stay current on merchant industry trends that impact the Commercial Merchant segment.

Required Skills

  • Strong analytical skill - must be able to analyze complex data, draw meaningful conclusion, and make holistic business recommendations
  • Ability to approach problems in a quantitative and qualitative manner
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong collaboration skills, and the ability to build rapport with members of other departments.
  • Strong working knowledge of external systems, PC based internet and software applications (Internet, Microsoft Office - Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Familiarity with PayPal and the merchant processing industry, particularly risk and operational processes


  • 3+ years of merchant service work experience related to merchant underwriting and/or commercial lending
  • Experience in financial statement analysis and assessment.
  • Experience preparing financial reviews, interpreting financial performance and assessing credit exposure
  • Experience in merchant risk review, and investigation.
  • Experience collaborating and building productive relationships across multiple departments.

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in Economics, Statistics, Finance, Mathematics or equivalent experience required. MBA or related graduate degree preferred.
