The Director of Data Governance position will be responsible for building and leading Ameritas data governance program. This is a technical and compliance leadership position that will be responsible for our Data Governance Strategy with the goal to protect the company and maximize the value of the Ameritas data. The key areas of work involve partnering with the business, Data and Developments to ensure that the data solutions being built consider best practices around data and its appropriate use.

This will be self-motivated leader in our Data & Analytics team, who will be working across the business, data engineering, application development, data governance, data science, finance, audit and compliance to understand the emerging needs, value and risk of data. A wide degree of creativity, relationship building, and thought leadership will be required to fulfill this role.

This role will be an important key to Ameritas technology enablement. As a key contributor to Ameritas Information Technology department, the Director of Data Governance role will:
* Establish and govern a data governance program which will create and manage data policies and processes, organization and roadmap.
* Become the primary driver of developing capabilities that will improve and sustain the governance, management, protection and value of Ameritas data assets.
* Develop the data governance practices and deeper guidance on how to adopt data governance principles across the organization.
* Provide requirements to our technology organization to enable tool delivery for improved data management for critical data including metadata management, data quality and lineage.
* Work with executive leadership, Risk Management & Compliance and all business lines and support groups on development, approval and adoption of data strategies and policies.
* Drive and influence decision making around data policy and capabilities within the Enterprise Data Governance Committee.
* Enable improved understanding of data governance and how it brings business value across the organization.

Essential Job Functions

* Enterprise coordination and implementation of a roadmap for data governance related strategic priorities considering business and technology needs and industry trends.
* Develop a cross functional data governance organization which consist of an executive decisioning body, governance committee, stewards, and custodians. Define the roles and responsibilities related to data governance and ensure clear accountability for stewardship of data
* Hold business, project leads and technology SMEs accountable for adherence to data policy requirements, including demonstration of assigned roles and responsibilities, as well as the ongoing tracking and resolution of issues.
* Engage in information governance practice and work with Risk and Compliance to ensure policies are adhered to, such as Records Retention, Data Loss Prevention, Identity and Access Management, Privacy, Data Protection etc.
* Actively engage in identifying continuous improvement opportunities to better manage structured and unstructured data both on premise and on the cloud.
* Drive collaborative efforts between business, functional and IT areas, resulting in the ability to aggregate across disparate data siloes.
* Instill data governance practices to support on premise and cloud environments that will address data security, consistency and data duplication.

Development and Execution of data governance program to include but not limited to:
* Request process for Acceptable Data Uses of business unit data assets
* Policy and Standards associated with business unit data assets
* Development of Data Management and Metadata best practices
* Work with cross-functional teams to resolve data discrepancies and system issues.
* Work closely with enterprise and business unit stakeholders to ensure alignment with enterprise business plans and strategic initiatives.
* Develop and deploy internal audit functions to monitor compliance with data governance principles.
* Develop and manage program metrics and reporting which includes reports and readouts.
* Drive efforts to build a robust business glossary, associated metadata, and data lineage
* Define and monitor performance and quality metrics

Requirements
* 10+ years of professional business experience with a progressive track record of accomplishments in Information Governance or Data Management required
* 5+ years of team leadership, development, and management experience preferred
* Relevant Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required; advanced degree preferred.
* Extensive experience in developing, planning and executing data management and/or data governance improvement initiatives.
* Driving change for data governance including: project/program management, software development life cycle methodologies, data quality, metadata software packages, metadata, and architecture.
* Good understanding of Insurance Regulatory environment or information services industry is desired.
* General industry awareness around data maturity models such as the EDM Councils model (DCAM) or DAMA.
* Knowledge of laws and regulations which may impact Ameritas -- HIPAA, ERISA, NAIC, Dodd-Frank - a plus
