The IS Service area is looking for skilled IT resources that are willing to experiment with new technologies and change the way business needs are solved with technology. As a part of this team you will partner with our Claims area to execute the strategy that builds technology solutions that directly impact the claims experience that policyowners have with Mutual of Omaha.  We want individuals that understand our current environment and how to interact with our legacy on-premise systems, and who are also passionate about streamlining those systems and moving them into a cloud-first architecture.   

The Principal Enterprise Architect will be a results-oriented strategic leader that shares accountability for the successful vision and execution of strategic initiatives.  The PEA works with business stakeholders and technical architects across all domains to drive holistic technology implementation across Value Streams and facilitate the realization of strategy. They operate without boundaries across the IS organization to establish and ensure business capability to strategic initiative alignment. They are granted wide spheres of independence for the purpose of researching methods to best introduce and integrate business capabilities.  They cultivate leadership throughout the IS organization and ensure that IS is effectively supporting the enterprise strategy. This position consistently operates at an Advanced Level. 

What You'll Do:

  • Influences outcomes with business and I/T partners through appropriate analysis and recommendations  
  • Investigate competitive industry trends and best practices to guide direction on key strategies  
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key business stakeholders   
  • Develop a business architecture strategy based on a situational awareness of various business scenarios and motivations.  
  • Apply a structured business architecture approach and methodology for capturing the key views of the enterprise.  
  • Capture the tactical and strategic enterprise goals that provide traceability through the organization and are mapped to metrics that provide ongoing governance.  
  • Describe the primary business functions of the enterprise and distinguish between customer-facing, supplier-related, business execution and business management functions.  
  • Define the set of strategic, core and support processes that transcend functional and organizational boundaries; identify and describe external entities such as customers, suppliers, and external systems that interact with the business; and describe which people, resources and controls are involved in the processes.  
  • Define the data shared across the enterprise and the relationships between those data.  
  • Capture the relationships among roles, capabilities and business units, the decomposition of those business units into subunits, and the internal or external management of those units.  
  • Works with business stakeholders and technical architects to drive enterprise strategy across Value Streams.  
  • Drives collaboration of programs and teams around a common solution vision.  
  • Maintains a high-level, holistic vision of enterprise solutions and development initiatives.  
  • Understands and communicates Strategic Themes and other key business drivers for architecture to technical architects and nontechnical stakeholders.  
  • Drives architecture initiatives with the Agile Portfolio & Program Operations (APPO) and participates in Epic analysis.  
  • Acts as an internal consultant, mentor and change agent across the enterprise. Develops communication plans and promotes enterprise architecture process and results to all levels within the organization. Assesses and communicates the achievement and impact of the enterprise architecture.  
  • Identifies and manages organizational and business process dependencies between projects and programs / portfolios, working closely with all levels within the organization.

  • Responsible for complying with all Company Information Services policies and standards.  
  • Translates ambiguities to accurately and clearly “tell a story” to all audiences to ensure understanding of impacts and potential risks associated with change.  
  • Successfully manages “change curves’ within IS associated with introduction of new systems and directions.  
  • Performs as a strategic leader to guide the vision and execution of operational effectiveness and efficiency.  
  • Coordinates with architects across the organization to develop and maintain architecture strategy.  
  • Understands the Company strategic vision and priorities, then recommends and communicates the appropriate roadmaps.  
  • Advocates effective architectural designs and optimizes current architecture and processes. Promotes appropriate use of and adherence to reference architectures.  
  • Ability to envision and run workshops, white boarding sessions and architecture reviews to align key stakeholders on architecture recommendations   
  • This position requires sitting over 66% of the time.
  • This position requires Visual Acuity at 20 inches (or less) over 66% of the time.

About You:

  • A broad, enterprise-wide view of the business and varying degrees of appreciation for strategy, processes and capabilities, enabling technologies, and governance
  • Knowledge of Mutual’s product base including Life, Disability, Medical, Medicare Supplement, Long Term Care, and Accident products for group, individual and special markets. 
  • Knowledge of cloud applications and structures, including API integration using Mulesoft and the relationships between experience, process, and system APIs. 
  • The ability to recognize structural issues within the organization, functional interdependencies and cross-silo redundancies.  Those issues may exist in role alignment, process gaps and overlaps, and business capability maturity gaps  
  • The ability to apply architectural principles, methods, and tools to business challenges  
  • The ability to assimilate and correlate disconnected documentation and drawings, and articulate their collective relevance to the organization and to high-priority business issues  
  • The ability to visualize and create high-level models (rigorous information-rich diagrams) that can be used in future analysis to extend and mature the business architecture  
  • Experience developing and using these high-level models as required to collect, aggregate or disaggregate complex and conflicting information about the business  
  • Extensive experience planning and deploying either business or IT initiatives (preference for both)  
  • Experience modeling business processes using a variety of tools and techniques (preference for Business Process Modeling Notation)  
  • Exceptional communication skills and the demonstrable ability to communicate appropriately at all levels of the organization; this includes written and verbal communications as well as visualizations  
  • The ability to act as liaison conveying information in suitably accurate models between the business unit and their counterparts within Information Technology.  The scope of this information includes business requirements, data constraints, business rules, models of strategy and motivation, processes, accountabilities, and many other business and IT operational needs   
  • Must be a Team player able to work effectively at all levels of an organization with the ability to influence others to move toward consensus.  Must be highly reliable, trustworthy, honest, and commitment oriented

  • Strong understanding of contemporary insurance concepts relating to business, market and industry trends. Ability to apply such knowledge to support the critical systems needed.  
  • Ability to assimilate, interpret and draw conclusions from an extensive variety of organization and business data with multiple abstract and concrete variables.  
  • Proven leadership abilities and tangible success implementing strategic business initiatives.  
  • Understanding of business financial management and planning and experience locating ways to reduce costs and IT expenses on a large-scale basis
