A Lead GIS Technician at LES is not your typical desk job. GIS Technicians at LES have the opportunity to get away from their cubicles to see their projects in the field on a weekly basis. With LES being a ratepayer owned public utility located in Lincoln, Nebraska, all site visits are just a short drive from the office; no need to worry about overnight stays or being away from family and friends.

CORE COMPETENCIES & ESSENTIAL DUTIES

 

Job Technical Skills – Assists with leadership support of assigned department staff and advanced-level design projects related to GIS/CAD. Specific responsibilities include development and implementation of new software and hardware, integrated workforce development and overseeing work of assigned staff, conducting field research, department budgeting, implementing and maintaining departmental standards, and other GIS/CAD-related programs and policies. Completion of duties may require the opening and inspection of energized, high-voltage electrical equipment or entering electrical substations. Consistent and reliable attendance is required. Performs engineering and technical work related to the construction and management of proposed and existing facilities, developments, and/or programs.

  • Leads staff to include prioritizing and assigning work, providing input on performance evaluations, monitoring employee performance, ensuring staff are trained, and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
  • Leads large, complex projects for area of assignment.
  • Assists with establishing and implementing policies and processes for area of assignment and assessing risk management of policies and department activities.
  • Serves as subject matter expert and acts as a liaison for both internal and external customers, providing recommendations or assistance regarding technology capabilities, policies and processes, or operations to establish and implement solutions.
  • Completes field survey of projects. Inspects, collects, and verifies data. Labels electrical facilities for use with GIS/CAD system records per LES procedures. Completion of duties may require the opening and inspection of energized, high-voltage electrical equipment or entering electrical substations.
  • Leads crisis/emergency efforts and outage restoration work for the department when necessary and maintains disaster control backup systems. This may include leading teams in other departments and managing outage records for system control.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Associates degree in Architectural Engineering Technology, Geographic Information Systems, Geography, or related field, and
  • At least five years of related work experience, or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
